As of today, the HVI mail server will remain online through at least Sunday 2/16.
The following week it may be unavailable at times as I begin cleaning up the server
in preparation for shutting it down, but I will keep it running as long as possible. I will
post more information here on https://hvi.net.
By now, you should:
- be almost exclusively using your new email address
- have sent a message to whoever you want to keep in touch with telling them you have a new email address
- have set up an auto-reply on your @hvi.net mailbox telling senders that your @hvi.net email address will stop working soon and to send mail to your new email address
- have changed your contact email address with all of your online accounts (banks, stores, streaming services, etc.)
- downloaded a permanent copy of all of the mail on the HVI server that you need to keep. If you use POP on a computer, you should be all set. If you use IMAP, be sure that you’ve archived or saved a local copy in a local folder. (For details on how to do this, see below.)
For those of you who have primarily used Modus webmail (https://HVImail.com) to access your email, all of the messages stored in folders there have been moved to your main mailbox and are now accessible using an IMAP connection. If you want to keep any of this mail on your computer after the HVI mail server is shut down, you will need to set up an IMAP email account on your computer and archive those messages.
Here are instructions for the most common email software:
Apple Mail on a Mac: https://hvi.net/index.php/2025/02/11/how-to-set-up-an-imap-account-in-apple-mail-on-a-mac/
Thunderbird: https://hvi.net/index.php/2025/02/11/how-to-set-up-an-imap-account-in-thunderbird/
Outlook: https://hvi.net/index.php/2025/02/11/how-to-set-up-an-imap-account-in-outlook/
For those of you looking to copy your @hvi.net IMAP messages directly into another email service, I’ve been told this link will do that.
(Disclaimer: I have not tried it and can not vouch for it.)
IMAPSYNC: https://imapsync.lamiral.info/X/
It should be free for up to 3 GB of email.
The IMAP source Mailbox is your @hvi.net account:
- Login: your full @hvi.net email address
- Password: your @hvi.net email password
- IMAP Server hostname: mail.hvi.net
The IMAP destination Mailbox is your new email account:
- Login: your new email address
- Password: your new email password
- IMAP Server hostname: varies depending on your new email address – you may need to ask your new email provider for this information
Using this to transfer mail to Gmail looks very complicated. Good luck if you try it.
